The New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx area of New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball as a member club in the East division of the American League. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to todays Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the New York Yankees in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC that is controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and Aaron Boone is the team’s field manager. The team’s home games were played at the original Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, the Yankees shared Shea Stadium with the Mets, In 2009, they moved into a new ballpark of the same name that was constructed adjacent to the previous facility, which was closed and demolished. The New York Yankees are among the leaders in Major League Baseballs attendances.
The Yankees are arguably the most successful professional sports team in the United States; their achievements include winning 19 American League East Division titles, 40 American League pennants, and 27 World Series championships, all of which are Major League records. The team has won more titles than any other franchise in the four major North American sports leagues. Forty-four Yankees players and eleven Yankees managers have been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Whitey Ford. To increase the New York Yankees chances of winning championships, the franchise has offered large payrolls to attract talent to the team, particularly during the Steinbrenner era. According to Forbes magazine, the Yankees are the second highest valued sports franchise in the United States and the second in the world, with an estimated value of approximately $4.6 billion. The team has built enormous popularity and a dedicated fan base, as well as widespread dislike from fans of other Major League teams. The Yankees biggest rivalry is with the Boston Red Sox and is one of the most well-known in North American sports.
With their recurring success since the 1920s, the Yankees have grown to become one of the most popular teams in the world, with their fan base coming from much further than the New York City region. The Yankees typically bring a large following in attendance at all or most of their various away games, drawing crowds of not just their own fans, but also hometown fans whose interest is heightened when the Yankees come to town.
The first 1 million-fan season was in 1920, when 1,289,422 fans attended Yankee games at the Polo Grounds. In 1946 the first 2 million fan season happened when 2,265,512 fans attended the games at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have beaten the league average for home attendance 83 out of the last 87 years (only being out numbered during 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1994 seasons). In the past seven years, the Yankees have drawn over three million fans each year, with setting an American League record for attendance with 4,090,696 in 2005, becoming only the third franchise in sports history to draw over four million in regular season attendance in their own stadium. The Yankees were also the league leaders on the road in attendances each year from 2001 through to 2006.
One well known fan was Freddy Schuman, popularly known as Freddy Sez. For over 50 years, he came to the Yankees’ home games with a baseball cap, a Yankees’ jersey, and a cake pan with a shamrock painted on it, which was connected to a sign inscribed with words of encouragement for the home team. Schuman died on October 17, 2010, at the age of 85.
