The Atlanta Hawks Schedule History.
1946 to 1953 The Atlanta Hawks started as the Buffalo Bisons Franchise. The Bisons were a part of the NBL and played their games at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. The Bisons first coach was Nat Hickey and their first game saw a victory over the Syracuse Nationals 50 – 39 and was played in November 1946.
The Buffalo Bisons Franchise only lasted only 38 days before moving to Moline, Illinois. The team was then renamed the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. In 1949 the Blackhawks became one of the 17 original teams to become part of the NBA.
1954 to 1965 Bob Petit a future NBA MVP was drafted to the Hawks. The Hawks were one of the NBA struggling teams and in 1955 the team moved to St Louis Missouri and became the St Louis Hawks. Legendary basketballer Bill Russell was drafted in 1956 but was immediately traded to the Boston Celtics for Cliff Hagan and Ed Macauley who are both in the Hall of Fame. In 1957 the Hawks won the division title after defeating Minneapolis Lakers and Fort Wayne Pistons, but lost to the Boston Celtics in a double overtime thriller.
The Hawks would avenge the title defeating the Celtics winning the series 4-2 and giving the Hawks their first and only NBA championship. Bob Petit scored a massive 50 points in the final game of the series. The Hawks would remain one of the NBA’s top sides for next 10 years.
1965 to 1981The Tri-Cities Blackhawks were sold to an Atlanta real estate developer in 1968 and were moved to Atlanta and renamed the Atlanta Hawks. In 1972 a 16,500 seat arena named the Omni Coliseum was developed and would become the new home for the Hawks. Also, that same year the Hawks were rebranded with a new logo and colours. Ted Turner a cable network entrepreneur became the team’s new owner and hired Hubie Brown to become head coach. Coach Brown won coach of the year in 1978. They also updated the teams uniform and colours navy blue, red and silver. 2008-2009 saw the Hawks win 47 games. 2009-2010 would see the Hawks go even further with 53 wins.
